NBSA considered the complaint, response and viewed the broadcast and was prima-facie of the view that the broadcaster had not violated the provisions contained in the NBA Guidelines; and the sting operation was conducted by a NGO called “Beti Bachao Samiti” and aired by the member broadcaster in “public interest” for a wrong doing by the doctor in her clinic. NBSA decided that no further action needs to be taken in the matter. However, if the complainant is not satisfied, she was free to resort to such action in accordance with law as she deems fit. The complaint was closed.

The complainants alleged during the ongoing strike by oil sector employees for revision of salaries, Star News had telecast misleading information that the oil sector officers at the entry level earned Rs 90,000- Rs 1,20,000 per month along with other benefits, when their gross salary at entry level was around Rs 38,000 only.

The complainant alleged that the broadcaster had given false information and had misguided the public in its news coverage by misinterpreting the salaries of PSU oil sector officers and calling the officers as “Deshdrohis” or “Terrorists”.

S.NO 914. Channel Star Majha Complainant Garware Polyster Ltd. Date of Broadcast 16.11.2008 Complaint

The complainant alleged that while running a news story on the initiative taken by Garware Nylon workers to revive the company by raising funds to purchase the company, in one or two bulletins the name of the company was mentioned as Garware Polyster Ltd. instead of Garware Nylon Ltd.

NBSA noted that the channel acknowledged the mistake and took action of running a clarification by a ticker. NBSA decided to close the complaint .NBSA also observed that the essence of the complaints received reiterated the fact that speed causes ambiguity/inaccuracy in reporting which affects the individuals and institutions that are subject matter of the news reports. NBSA was of the view that the members should be more cautious and take adequate steps to ensure accuracy in reporting to avoid harm to persons and necessity of later clarification.

The complainant alleged that a ticker was shown on ETV2 as “Murder of a youth near Karteeka Vanam near Rushikonda”. He stated that it was false news and had caused great damage and loss to their revenues and reputation as it was a beach resort & food park carrying on commercial activities.

NBSA considered the complaint and the response and decided that since the broadcaster had changed the ticker and a clarification had been issued by the broadcaster to the complainant of the action taken, no further action was required. The complaint be closed.

S.NO 916. Channel INDIA TV Complainant Justice (Retd) Rajinder Sachar Date of Broadcast 07-01-2009 Complaint

The complainant alleged that India TV had run a story which provocatively boasted that India’s Brahmaputra missile can destroy major cities of Pakistan, including Lahore and Multan was most irresponsible and dangerous and it had crossed all limits of responsible journalism.

NBSA considered the complaint and the response from the broadcaster and closed the complaint. NBSA reemphasized that television channels very often gave news which was provocative and was insensitive to the impact and the likely fall out a story could have. NBSA observed that sound editorial judgment and discretion should be exercised before airing any story that is provocative. Members / editorial staff should observe diligently the Code of Ethics of the NBA and ensure compliance of the Codes /various Guidelines issued by the NBA/ NBSA.

S.NO 917. Channel Aaj Tak Complainant Mr. Shirish L. Sardeshpande Date of Broadcast 05-12-2008 Complaint

The complainant alleged that a news item was aired on Aaj Tak , which showed that even after the terror attack of 26/11, Jalgaon police continued with their Police Welfare Cultural shows till 29.8.2011, which should have been cancelled. In the same news item, it was reported that the program was held at Chalisgaon on 28.11.08 at the instance of the complainant. He stated that the program was held on 22.11.2008 and not on 28.11.2008 and the mistake had defamed both him and his family and has caused embarrassment and severe disrepute. He requested an apology to be aired on the channel.
