    Secretary General

    Annie Joseph is a Post Graduate in Sociology from the Delhi School of Economics. She graduated in 1978 and joined the Center for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), as a Research Associate with late Prof. Rajni Kothari and Prof. Ashish Nandi. During the five years in CSDS, Annie worked on several election-related research projects including Lokayan, of which she was the Secretary. Lokayan was awarded the “Right Livelihood Award”, which is considered to be an “Alternative Nobel Prize”. Following her stint at CSDS, Annie joined the Indian Newspaper Society (INS). Annie spent 23 years in the INS, working with the government on issues relating to media freedom, wage boards, legal matters pertaining to freedom of speech and expression and monitoring of advertising dues of member of NBDA. Annie began her career in INS as a Research Officer and rose to be Secretary Designate of the Indian Newspaper Society. While at the INS, Annie was instrumental in developing a first of its kind online solution that enabled faster recovery of advertising dues by member newspapers & periodicals from accredited advertising agencies. After her foray in the print media, in 2007 Annie moved to the electronic media to become the Secretary General of the News Broadcasters & Digital Association (NBDA), the only Association of 24x7 news channels. NBDA caters specifically to the legal, regulatory and content related issues of 24X7 news channels . Annie has spent close to 15 years with the NBDA and has overseen the setting up the News Broadcasting & Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA). The NBDSA is the first initiative by news broadcasters towards self-regulation.
